Tor.com – Paying Fiction Market
Tor.com wants your speculative fiction stories!
Tor.com is a prominent publisher of speculative fiction, including horror, sci-fi, fantasy, alternate history, space opera stories, time travel thrillers, techno-thrillers, cyberpunk and related genres. The editors really want to see stories that represent the full diversity of speculative fiction, so feel free to cross those genres and push the boundaries.
If your speculative fiction short story is accepted, Tor.com buys the rights to publish the story on their website and any related electronic endeavors. They may also request various other rights to your story, including translation rights and audio rights. Rights are to be exclusive for a period of 12 months, with non-exclusive rights retained after that point.
Selected stories may also be used in future Tor.com-branded anthologies, which will include payment of additional royalties.
The editors freely admit their response times are slow, but they do respond to the vast majority of submissions within around three months.
Please do not submit reprints or multiple submissions. No simultaneous submissions will be accepted.
Word Counts: The editors of Tor.com prefer stories no longer than 12,000 words, although they may consider submissions of longer fiction stories if they’re particularly good.
Payment: Tor.com is one of the highest paying speculative fiction markets. They pay 25 cents per word for the first 5,000 words. Payment drops to 15 cents per word for the next 5,000 words and drops further to 10 cents per word after that.
Tor.com is also seeking submissions of novella-length stories, particularly in the science fiction genre. Submissions of novellas should be between 30,000 and 40,000 words.
