Earn $250 for Mystery Short Stories
Black Cat Mystery Magazine is a new magazine from Wildside Press seeking short mystery stories that involve a crime. The editors specify that they want to feature stories written by a mix of new and established writers.
The editors want to see contemporary and traditional mysteries, thrillers and suspense stories, private eye tales, cozy stories, or edgy, noir-tinged stories. As long as the story contains a crime of some description and contains characters who feel real, go ahead and submit it.
The editors of Black Cat Mystery Magazine DO NOT want to see flash fiction or poetry. Stories that feature sadism for the sake of sadism will also not be accepted. They also don’t want to see stories that contain supernatural elements, no vampires, no werewolves, ghosts, or any otherworldly monsters.
Black Cat Mystery Magazine is published both in print and online, with four issues published each year. It’s also the sister publication of the Sherlock Holmes Mystery Magazine.
It isn’t necessary to query the magazine about a story. As long as it fits within the magazine’s content guidelines, writers are invited to submit during open submission periods.
Response times are generally between 1 and 2 weeks. Reading times and submission opening times vary throughout the year, so be sure to check the website before submitting.
Word Count: Preferred word count is between 1,000 and 8,000 words.
Payment: Payment is three (.03) cents per word, up to $250 maximum, plus two copies of the magazine.
